Smart textiles are increasingly affecting the medical textiles industry. They are proving their effectiveness as diagnostic systems.
Nowadays, E-textiles cover almost all parts of the human body and have access to several bio-signals what make them able to provide a continuous connection between the human body and the digital tools.
Several sensors developments that provide solutions to real and existing problems are presented at the IFAI EXPO 2021 by researchers from German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research (DITF).
The first solution presented consists on the integration of sensors into leggings for EMG monitoring of muscle fatigue. The integrated sensors require no wires or sensor nodes. The data is communicated to a smart phone indicating muscle fatigue.
A second development described a sensory stocking that is able to prevent pressure ulcers for diabetic patients. This solution is still under development.
Another technology, which is commercialized as “SensorRun”, allows the monitoring of a runner acceleration and rotation with the goal of reducing and preventing injuries and improve performance.
All these solutions highlight the ability of smart textiles applications to respond to real market needs.
